tonight’s song dot land celebrates chinese new year in its own way, and i bring you a poem inspired by mary oliver, written after a walk on the winter solstice. i took mary oliver’s wild geese and wrote my version with the guidance of each line of the original. i also have been reading thich nhat hanh’s being peace, which inspires much here.
the written words to my song, though i varied as i sang it and added more to the end.
recorded 2025-02-05 during the first quarter waxing moon.
poem begins at 10:00.
you do not have to fear
you do not have to gallop
through your trails
to get away
i whistle for peace, they meet me
and i them, for fellowship
deer like giant rabbits,
as silent as they are gone
confess to me your matters
i will revel in details and add my own
the power of the moon
the power of the sun
solstice
spring is on its way
solstice
the sun set at five

stabbing the sky
you know the animal is just near
running through brush
on cold dirt
you could hear that. i
didn’t. she’s still here.

my mom asked me
if i still believe in the
LORD over fruitcake aged
in brandy for three years
under hard sauce. delicious.
seven years i ran like the deer
today
